Furniture can cause CANCER?!

First of all, let me preface this post with this: I am a Floridian and had no idea that California had something like Proposition 65 that warned of an item containing ” chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.”

So imagine my surprise when I was looking for a futon for our new office (isn’t it a pretty futon?)…

…and then saw this warning:

California Proposition 65 Warning

Say, WHAT!? I did such an extreme double-take that I shook my brain a bit.

I love that futon, but I’m obviously very hesitant about buying a piece of furniture that has chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.  I’m young and don’t have children yet so the thought of compromising this someday process of having children with no birth defects is worrisome.

What do you think about this warning and its validity? Have you purchased furniture with this warning and felt safe using it as it should be?

Your advice is appreciated,
Katie
